just got back from Portland, and it was quite the weekend. Lots of work to see over the course of the 2 day reviews. I was lucky enough to be part of this great event. If you have the chance to participate in the upcoming 2009 reviews - do it! The information is posted on PhotoLucida's website.

Daily Dose of Information

Photograph Magazine has an article this month on blogs. so many blogs, so little time. Images and commentary are flooding the netwaves, and if you haven't got these blogs on your daily reading list, go ahead, take a look and add them.

Tacoma Art Museum is accepting entries for The 9th Northwest Biennial from Saturday, June 14 through Saturday, July 26, 2008, via the CaFÉ (Call for Entry) online application process at
www.callforentry.org . The Biennial is open to current residents of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Only work created since January 2007 will be considered. Artists working in a wide variety of media, including traditional forms, craft-based work, conceptual, performance, installation, and digital projects, are encouraged to apply. This competition is for an emerging photographer with a strong, cohesive body of work that has not been widely exhibited or published. Prize includes an all-expenses paid solo exhibition at the Julia Dean Gallery and an Canon EOS Digital SLR camera. Includes printing, matting, framing, exhibition costs, and a trip to Venice, CA. Send 20-30 images on a CD. $100 entry fee. See

The purpose of the Portfolio Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and specific artists whom we can help by bringing their work to a wider audience. In choosing the first-prize winner and runners-up, we are looking for work that is fresh and that hasn’t been widely seen in major publications or exhibition venues. 
First prize is $2,500. The first-prize winner and runners-up are featured on Aperture’s website for approximately one year. Winners are also announced in the foundation’s e-newsletter, which reaches thousands of subscribers in the photography community. To see the work of the winner and runners-up for the 2007 prize, please click here.

The entry period for the 2008 Aperture Portfolio Prize is through Friday, July 11.

Please Ring Bell!


If you haven't submitted already- jump in! Entries must be in by 9 May. That's coming up!

This annual juried exhibition draws entries from across the country and around the world, and remains among the most popular shows in PCNW's annual schedule.

The competition is open to all photographers, all photographic processes, and all themes. The juror is looking for work that represents a larger, cohesive body of work and will be selecting a short series from each photographer chosen.
From among those exhibited, our juror will select first, second and third prize winners to receive prizes of $1,000, $750, and $500. Submissions must be received by Friday, May 9th, 2008. See www.pcnw.org for submission guidelines. Please Ring Bell will run July 11 – August 28th at PCNW in Seattle, WA.


Juror: Rod Slemmons
Rod Slemmons has been the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago since 2002 where he has curated several exhibitions and teaches undergraduate photo history and graduate theory seminars. Slemmons previously taught at the U.W. in Seattle for 12 years. He was the National Chair of the Society for Photographic Education from 1990 - 1994. Slemmons was the Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Seattle Art Museum for 14 years, producing 35 exhibitions and numerous catalogs.
